Pack It Up

Dealing with picky eaters? You may be bored of packing the same thing every day, but maybe they are not bored of eating it!  Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Offer new foods on a regular basis.
  • Be a good role model by eating a variety of healthy foods so they can see you enjoying them.
  • Involve your children in preparing meals or snacks. They will be more likely to try new foods when they’ve helped!

Pack a rainbow in your child’s lunch!

Send your child to school with a lunch full of colourful veggies and fruit! Try these kid friendly ideas:

  • Add grated carrot to egg or tuna salad.
  • Pack veggies or fruit in small bite size pieces.
  • Cut veggies and fruit using tools like melon ballers, vegetable crinkle cutters, cookie cutters or even an egg slicer to add some fun.
  • Add a shake of cinnamon for flavor to cut fruit that tends to turn brown.
  • Send a small container of yogurt to dip fruit in; try hummus for veggies.

Packing a Healthy School Lunch

A school lunch should give children the energy and nutrients they need to learn, be more alert and do well at school.

When planning lunches keep these tips in mind:

  • Include a variety of foods each day.
  • Rather than buying pre-made lunch kits, make your own healthy lunch kit with divided containers and small bite-sized cheese cubes, left over chicken chunks, whole grain cereal, veggie sticks or fruit slices.
  • Get your kids to eat more veggies…send cucumber slices, zucchini sticks and pepper strips with dip.
  • Fill whole wheat or multi grain wrap/pitas/tortilla shells with your child’s favourite foods like hummus and grated carrot or shredded cheese and beans.
  • Send water to drink – it is the best choice for all of us.
