Reason to Celebrate
Celebrations at School
Celebrations are exciting! They are great opportunities to be active, have fun, be creative, share food, and enjoy time together.
Food is more than nutrients and can be an important part of celebration, connection, and culture. Some celebrations don’t need to include food. This takes the pressure off teachers and parents to supply additional food and ensures that no students are excluded due to food allergies or other food-related practices.
Follow the 4-step process to take a planned and comprehensive approach to work on this topic.
Getting Started
- What celebrations commonly happen at your school?
- Are food and drinks usually available?
- Are food and drinks necessary at all celebrations?
- What types of non-food activities could be included as part of your celebration?
- Is there a budget for celebrations?
Bright Ideas
Focus on FUN rather than food:
- Emphasize being together as a class or school community to celebrate something special!
- Brainstorm activity ideas together with the students; for example, have a dance party or a special craft activity.
If food is involved in the celebrations:
- Ensure food and beverages offered are inclusive and reflective of the preferences, faiths, and cultures of the school community.
- Consider serving a variety of options and providing a safe, pleasant eating place.
- Practice safe food handling and ensure adherence to the school’s anaphylaxis policy.
- Sit down and eat together rather than eating throughout the celebration.
