Fresh It Up
Eating Spaces
It's important to have welcoming and inclusive spaces to create a sense of belonging and connectedness. The school should have safe and pleasant eating spaces where students can go to enjoy food, socialize and relax before and between classes.
Follow the 4-step process to take a planned and comprehensive approach to work on this topic.
Getting Started
- Are there safe, clean, pleasant, upbeat and fun eating spaces throughout the school?
- Is the Administration open to making changes to the eating spaces (e.g., changing tables and seating arrangements, décor, paint colours, music)?
- Is the eating space set up so that students can socialize and interact appropriately?
Bright Ideas
- Consider providing a variety or making changes to existing eating spaces throughout your school. Students may eat in the cafeteria, classrooms, hallways, guidance room, atrium, quiet room, outdoor courtyard, etc.
- Make sure there is enough table space and seating arrangements for all students, including those with special needs (e.g. tables, benches, picnic tables). Try circular tables, chairs with high backs or tables with charging stations instead of or in addition to the usual long tables and attached benches.
- Consider the noise levels and think about adding sound-absorbing materials to walls and ceilings (e.g. drapes, baffles) or creating a quiet space or separate room.
- Ensure there is enough light (from windows and overhead lights) to create a bright and cheerful atmosphere.
- Make the spaces visually appealing and welcoming with art installations, murals, posters, calm music, natural elements, etc.
- Host interactive activities during lunch hours (e.g. intramural activities, trivia, chess or board games, karaoke, etc.)
