Weight-based bullying

Weight-based comments and body shaming is a form of bullying and harassment. This is often reported as the most frequent type of bullying experienced by students. Weight-based bullying can impact students greatly. It can lead to depression, negative body image, poor self-esteem, and weight preoccupation. These symptoms, if persistent, can lead to disordered eating.

Follow your school’s bullying intervention plan if you witness or are told about a weight-based comment or bullying incident. The best way to prevent weight-based bullying is to create a body inclusive school. Never encourage a student to change their weight or appearance to stop the bullying.
