Hear the Crunch – Louis Honore Frechette, May 2017

We used our grant from Food For Learning to purchase apples for the whole school from Eatrite. We had some student leaders divide all of the apples into bags to distribute to each class. During a school wide assembly we participated in the Big Crunch. We gave all of the students an apple each. We did a countdown and all bit into our apples at the same time to hear the sound of a big crunch. We ensured that we put all of the apple cores in the green bin to keep our responsibility to the environment.

Freggie Fun – St. Padre Pio Catholic Elementary School, May 2017

Our school’s healthy schools committee began planning for Nutrition Month just after Christmas. It was decided that SPP would celebrate Nutrition Month during the first week of March. Our activities included:

  • Having the healthy student ambassadors trained by the Public Health Nutritionist putting together morning announcements to share with students around healthy eating messages.
  • Having the student ambassadors go from class to class with the interactive nutrition wheel from York Public Health to share grade appropriate nutrition and healthy eating messages with students.
  • Renting “FREGGIE” (part fruit and part veggie mascot) from the Ontario Produce Marketing Association to go to classes with the big wheel. This was very interactive and the children enjoyed visiting with Freggie and getting a Freggie key chain.
  • Ending the week by participating in the Big Apple Crunch.
  • Activities were advertised on the board outside of the school as well as in the monthly school newsletter. A big thank you to the healthy student ambassadors and everyone on the healthy schools committee for co-ordinating a successful campaign.

Door Decorators – Glen Cedar Public School, April 2017

During the two weeks of January 24th to February 2nd, all homeroom classrooms participated in decorating their classroom door. The doors were decorated to promote healthy eating. This coincided with our morning PA announcements and e-blasts. We invited our Public Health Nurse and Dietitian to join our Healthy Eating Ambassadors (students) in judging each of the doors. The doors were so well done and creative! The winning doors promoted healthy eating throughout the week and eating foods from each of the four food groups. It was a great way to engage even our youngest students.
