Success Story

I wanted the students/staff at my school to rethink what they drink! Calories in drinks are not hidden (they’re listed right on the Nutrition Facts label), but many people don’t realize just how many calories beverages can contribute to their daily intake. Most students/staff try to reduce their calorie intake by focusing on food, but another way to cut calories may be to think about what you drink.

NO PAIN IN THE BRAIN: DRINK LOTS OF WATER TO PREVENT DEHYDRATION
Drinking water is the best way to quench your thirst. Even better, it doesn’t come with all the sugar and energy (kilojoules) found in fruit juice drinks, soft drinks, sports drinks and flavoured mineral waters.
Drinking water instead of sweetened drinks also prevents dental problems, while the fluoride found in tap water can help strengthen teeth and bones.
We completed the steps for this badge by creating morning announcements on the importance of drinking water, how we can ‘eat’ water by having fruits and vegetables in our diet. Creating a bulletin board as a visual to show how much teaspoon of sugar is in each beverage (using the information from Sipsmart). The “heroes” who helped me with this month long project were the St Catherine of Siena Healthy School Committee.
