Team Aldergrove test
We are a K-8 school located in Markham. Aldergrove is a Performance Plus school, which the York Region District School Board characterizes as a school with a large number of students who are impacted by poverty. Our school has a strong focus on social justice and community activism. We are also part of the “Healthy Schools” initiative and we offer healthy snacks to students free of charge at any time of day. Our Eco Team runs a “You’re The Chef” program for students in Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8. All the items that are prepared by students are vegetarian, fresh, healthy and cost-effective. Students have the opportunity to learn about the environmental and health benefits of a plant-based diet while also gaining valuable life skills in a fun and safe environment, all free of cost to them. Since a large majority of our students are English Language Learners, a cooking program gives them a chance to practice and learn new vocabulary in a non-formal academic setting. Our staff team works very hard to provide our students with various non-formal educational experiences because we recognize the long lasting impact of learning by doing and all the ways that it helps us raise conscientious and contributing members of society.
