Beyond the Cupcake

We have many reasons to celebrate at our school and we love a good celebration, but the foods that we celebrate with often are high in sugar, fat and sodium.

You can help make our classroom celebrations healthier, to support what our students are learning in the classroom and get them excited about healthy snacks and treats too!

Think beyond the cupcake (and other treats like cookies and candies) and consider sending fruit or veggies to your child’s classroom instead. There are lots of ways to make healthy food fun. You could also send non-food items or party favours like game and craft supplies, pencils, erasers, etc.

Healthy Celebrations

Celebrations are great opportunities for children to practice the healthy eating messages they learn in class. You can help us teach the importance of healthy eating, by choosing healthy foods to send to school the next time your child’s class is celebrating. Try these ideas:

  • Send a tray of watermelon slices, box of clementines or fruit kabobs.
  • Send a tray of whole grain crackers, cubes of lower fat cheese and grapes.
