Success Story

The students at Temagami Public School headed out to the playground armed with power tools, lumber, and screws. They built garden boxes that would start off our community garden and hopefully provide us with some delicious meals in September! Over a 3 day period, they built, filled, and shopped for their plants. Our gardens are host to a variety of vegetables and herbs, carefully planted by their owners. We can’t wait for the feast! Thank you to Healthy Kids Community for the funding to make this great project a reality!

Success Story

The students at Temagami Public School are focused on writing opinion pieces that will convince their readers to take a stand. After doing the Sugar Shocker lesson, and reading a news article advocating for added tax on sugary beverages, we asked: Should the Government put an extra tax on sugary drinks? The students at Temagami Public School had to create a list of pros and cons, then defend their positions. They wrote an opinion statement, following an opening statement, paragraph, evidence, and conclusion format. It’s a mixed review! Some of us think that education about sugary drinks is enough-we need to make our own decisions about what we put in our bodies- some of us argue that this is a great idea, it will stop some people from blindly choosing unhealthy beverages if the price tags are higher.

Success Story

The students at Temagami Public School participated in a healthy cooking competition. They searched for favourite “unhealthy” recipes, then planned ways to make them healthier. In a taste testing, they voted for the top recipe in categories of taste, look, and smell. The top teams in the taste category prepared Healthy Cake, and Fruit Pops. The winners of “appearance” were the French Fry chefs, while Lemon Raspberry Muffins took the smell category. Our friends Tammy Flood and Angela Labonte braved the kitchens with our young chefs and limited equipment. We couldn’t have done it without them!
