We did cross curriculum and tied healthy eating into our Literacy. One of the topics in literacy is called Food Smarts where the students learned how to read the ingredients on packages and the “look fors” to help them choose a healthier snack. We also covered a topic called Myths and Facts about food. In this we looked at companies that claim healthier foods because they have less sugars or fat free products and the myths and facts behind these advertisements. Students presented and researched the cause and effects of 3 different foods. How certain foods affect our bodies and suggests and alternatives in eating different foods. Some myths and facts about certain foods. Very interesting presentations!
We promote, highlight and serve vegetables and fruit at school to help students, teachers and others paint their plates with yummy, veggies and fruit every day! We talk about the importance of healthy snacks and we are enrolled in a program that will deliver healthy snacks to the school!
We have Litterless Lunch competitions between classrooms and get rock star tickets to be drawn at the end of the week for recognition! Our class also won the Litterless Lunch competition with the whole school!
Talked to the students about ways to succeed in eating healthier. They made suggestions to each other and the class as a whole for non food prizes! We use rockstar tickets for our successes which are drawn at the end of the week. Names of the students are announced over the school PA system as rockstar leaders!
Introduced this program to the students! All were pumped to start! Students only bring water to school. They are able to read the nutrition label on their drinks and were comparing the amount of sugar in their drinks. Now they do this on a regular basis!
Also no more water bottles. They all have refillable containers!
