Success Story

To help Celebrate World Water Day (March 22) our gr. 2’s read books about water….we looked at water around the world and how kids their age used water and didn’t have access to CLEAN DRINKING WATER like them…we talked about ways to save/use water and not waste water. Students then made posters to advertise ways to conserve water at home and at school.
Students then wrote letters to THANK WATER for all the wonderful ways it is used and how lucky they are to have water in their lives. They read their letters over the announcement to let other students know the importance of water!

Success Story

Students who are in their 4th Year Health Science Class at Queen’s University who are doing their placement for the Heart and Stroke Foundation came in and talked to the students about Ways to Stay Healthy (staying active and eating healthy). We looked at healthy snacks, balanced food menus, food labels – how to read them to make sure they are healthy, how much sugar was in different drinks – cola, hot chocolate, fruit juice, power sport drinks, etc. We also talked about how much daily activity we need daily to help keep our hearts healthy! Students enjoyed this presentation and learned how important it is to keep our hearts healthy by eating well and exercising more!

As a class we talked about our Valentine’s Party. We decided to have a “Friendship Party” celebration. A letter was sent home to parents to tell them about our “Healthy Friendship Valentine’s Party.”  We decided to make a Fruit Salad to represent all our friends in our class. We also decided to have veggies and cheese and healthy crackers and water to drink. Each student decided on their favorite fruit or vegetable to bring in. We talked about/learned about each fruit and vegetable and what part of our body they helped. It was a fun party and students enjoyed eating the healthy foods! Some students came up for thirds!!! They did not care that they didn’t eat any sweets. The next day, I received a few notes in agendas from parents telling me how their child enjoyed our party and talked about the yummy food they ate!

Plastic bottles are not allowed (strongly discouraged!) Students have their own water bottles at their desks for drinking all day!…. We have a water filter /water station for fresh, cold water…. Students are strongly encouraged to drink water only throughout the day and not juices! (only at lunch!)

We had a presentation of Healthy Eating from the Kingston Health Unit and they provided our students with their own water bottles and this got the students very excited about drinking more water. We have talked about the importance of drinking water rather than drinking juices/ fruit drinks that are high in sugar. We talked about “athletes” drinking power drinks that are on the market!

Our class made “Stone Soup”. Every student was assigned a vegetable, spice, broth etc. to contribute to our community soup. We discussed the importance of everyone doing their part and working together! We discussed different vegetables and their importance, spices etc. We cooked the soup at school then, we had a celebration! We made our own placemats and had a special prayer service to thank God for the wonderful food we eat! After, we wrote our own “Procedural” recipe for Stone Soup and took them home so students could make their own vegetable Stone Soup!!! It was so much fun participating in this activity. Students were so surprised that they loved the soup….YUM YUM!!!
