The students were excited about receiving their badge this week as each and every day a group leader would remind their group members to bring in healthy snacks. The students created a Venn Diagram about healthy snacks and snacks that might not be. Students pointed out that some snacks might appear healthy but if they came in package, it is really important to read the label. The students came up with the idea to bring in healthier snacks to school and decided that it would be on a Thursday. The students all encouraged one another to bring in healthy snacks throughout the week, so when the day it came to tally the points it would be an easy task to do, as this would be a habit formed earlier in the week. A moment that stood out the most today was when a student said ” I went grocery shopping with my mom this week. I picked out my snacks with her as she coached me on some healthier options. ” The groups all came close to receiving an equal amounts of points. The snacks mostly consisted of biodegradable items, such as apples, bananas, cherry tomatoes, carrots, celery.
The class participated actively as a team. The students were encouraging one another throughout the week to be mindful of the snacks they carry in their bags. This week’s favourite moment was when one of the students noticed that their snack (granola bar) seemed healthy, but when their read the ingredients, they realized it contained more sugar than anticipated. This week’s groups were all close enough to the amount of healthy snacks each group had on Thursday.
Students brain stormed their ideas in their individual groups to create visuals and reasoning beside each one for “Healthy Snacks” day. The students all shared their ideas and concluded that healthy snacks need to benefit their bodies in a positive way. The students encouraged one another through out the week, so it became a habit. The day of the tally of Healthy snacks options came and this week all groups surpassed their points from the week prior. This was a proud moment for them.
