Success Story

Our Green Team is always funding ways to make our school environmentally friendly. They decided to plant a garden with some salad as well as flowers. Our Green Team lead, Mrs. Abbruzzese, went out and bought soil, salad and flower plants. The students on the Green Team rolled up their sleeves and started digging!! It was wonderful to see the students get excited about growing their own garden.

A Flyer was sent out to all parents to let them know that the entire school was going to participate in the Big Apple Crunch on March 9. Everyone bit into an apple at the same time!! The best part was 2:30 p.m. when the “big crunch” was heard throughout the school halls!! Promoting healthy eating is very important and the positive result was that everyone had a delicious, healthy apple to eat that day!

Several members of our Parent Council sat with our school Nutritionist and Nurse to discuss how we can look at our lunch service providers and make some changes. A notice was sent out to parents letting them know that our school would be having a Pizza Taste Test. There were three pizza suppliers who participated, and the school did a “blind” taste test. In the end, the school chose our local pizza supplier who is PPM 150 compliant. Many thanks to the parent volunteers who helped cut up the pizzas into bite-size pieces and delivered them to each class.

Success Story

Some of our Grade 8 students who participated in the “You’re the Chef” program in Grade 6 were re-trained in proper washing of hands and food, cutting of fruits and vegetables, and preparation of a healthy meal.
Those Grade 8’s then led a training session to all Grade 4’s in our school. They taught the Grade 4’s how to properly wash their hands, how to wash fruits and vegetables, and they prepared delicious Pizza-dillas and a refreshing and healthy Yogourt Parfait. The grade 4s cut up all the fruit themselves for the parfaits, and they prepared and cooked the pizza-dillas on skillets.
It was such a wonderful experience to see!! The grade 8’s were superstars in explaining and demonstrating different cutting techniques and giving out so many useful tips to the Grade 4’s.
The grade 4’s had so much fun learning and preparing their recipes!
Thanks to our school Nutritionist and Nurse who helped organize this event!

Success Story

Some of our Grade 6’s signed up to take part in the “You’re the Chef” program. For three consecutive weeks, parent volunteers led four groups of students on a cooking adventure!! We made oatmeal, homemade granola, bruschetta, black bean dip, fajitas and pasta.
The students learned how to wash and cut vegetables, how to measure ingredients and how to follow a recipe. The favourite part of this program was watching the students eat and enjoy what they prepared.

Success Story

Some of our grade 8 students volunteered to participate in the PLAY (Peer Leadership for Active Youth) program. They were trained by the Public Health Nurse, some parent volunteers, and staff to participate and learn physical activity games which they will then use to teach the other grades in the school. During their training, the students ate fruits and vegetables and drank water. This BrightBites badge is an important one to St. Raphael the Archangel because during this activity and training, we used healthy foods and water for a snack which fueled the students with nutrients they needed to complete all tasks! The positive results were a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Many thanks to parent volunteers Antonietta Maione and Nadia De Franco for volunteering their time and helping distribute the healthy snacks.

Success Story

At the beginning of the school year, we send a flyer out to parents to tell them about our Milk Program. In the flyer there are benefits of milk and we give the parents the opportunity to sign their children up to receive milk twice a week throughout the school year. The results are very positive. Parents and kids know that there are so many benefits to drinking milk, and this program is widely received by our school.
