Success Story

For several weeks students cooked together in their winter elective program, using recipes that were delicious and were lower in sugar (breakfast muesli, carrot breakfast ‘cookies’, homemade cheese ravioli). After cooking and trying lower sugar recipes, students did an ‘audit’ of their school recycling bins to find what empty beverage containers they found. Beverage containers were collected and washed out. Students noticed there were many sugary beverage containers. Their group had a discussion about sugar in beverages. On the last week of winter electives, students worked in groups to look at the empty beverage container’s nutrition facts tables and calculate the amount of sugar contained in each. Students translated the number of grams of sugar into teaspoons of white sugar. They measured the sugar out and created a display using the beverage containers. This display was set up at the front entrance, along with the SipSmart Community poster guide to to making healthy beverage choices to help promote awareness to the whole school.

Success Story

Students from Monck Public School in Bracebridge signed up for a cooking winter elective. Each week they progressed in their cooking. Week 1 making a museli recipe, week 2 making homemade pizzas and week 3 baking Healthy Carrot and Oat Breakfast ‘Cookies’. The students enjoyed following the recipe and working together in small groups to learn about wet and dry measures, how the recipe fit in the food groups from Canada’s Food Guide and the science of baking! The kids felt the recipe was healthy but fun too! The flax seeds gave it a nice crunch. Each student had a small sample and the rest of the breakfast cookies will be offered in the Monck Breakfast program for the rest of the week. The kids felt a lot of pride that they are supporting their breakfast program.
Some of the kids favourite parts of their cooking program were: the calming nature of cooking, learning skills to help more at home, “feeding all four” (mind, body, spirit and emotion).
