Student leaders have initiated “Freshy Fridays” at our school to help towards our fundraising goals. Leaders plan, promote and prepare fresh healthy snacks that incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables that are available for students to purchase. It has been a great way to get students talking and participating in healthy food choices.

Our students love the You’re the Chef program! They are able to take a hands on approach to learning about how to plan and prepare healthy meals that they get to enjoy with their peers. It has been a great learning experience for all of the participants for the last few years.

We made it an option that anyone with a healthy snack (from home or from the school) could take a selfie at recess with their snack. The selfies were posted as part of the tv slideshow in our front hall. More and more students continue to come to the office for snacks and selfies. Our current data shows that more students are having fruit or vegetables for snacks than earlier in the year.

The goal of the project was to use posters to promote eating different fruits and vegetables. We wrote slogans that we thought students and teachers would notice when they walked by our colourful posters in the hallways. Our favourite part of designing our healthy food promoting posters is that students will see them and start eating different kinds of fruits and vegetables. We are hoping that people will look at our posters and want to eat healthy. We made a slide show about gardening and showed it on the TV in the front hallway of our school to teach about the benefits of whole foods, gardening and farming. In our slideshow we talked about different gardening songs, different pictures to show how creative you could be with gardening and ideas on how to make edible gardens. Umut’s favorite part was when we made the slide show. Ryan’s favourite part was when we made the last page of the slide. The positive results were when we made the slide and put it on the TV. We helped each other to make and edit the slideshow. We are excited to use what we learned to create our own edible garden in the classroom. Umut’s favorite part was when we made the slide show. Our favorite moment was when we went around class to class because it built up our confidence. We enjoyed making our costumes and are excited to present to the other students in our school all that we have learned in a fun way!

Success Story

The goal of this project is to get students drinking water, one of our daily needs. First, we were thinking of a way to advertise to students to drink water. Next, we made a slide presentation to advertise and let students get to know that water is great! Then, we displayed the presentation on the big screen in the front hallway of our school so that all teachers, community members and students would get the education about the importance of water. We were going for water works as it is a very needed resource on earth. We were thinking to encourage students to drink lots of water instead of the sugary drinks. So we made a presentation to convince students that water is important and we need to drink it. Many of our classmates were working on BrightBites badge projects to help promote healthy eating in our school. We put up the posters for our Healthy Lunch Challenge, sent home bookmarks and food guides to help spread the message. In class we learned about how to create healthy meals using foods from all different cultures. The picture we took is of Vivek and Sammy’s lunches. They both have had 3 or 4 food groups every day and their lunches look very delicious. We are excited to see all of the healthy lunches tomorrow!

The goal of the project was to create a stand out painting that showed healthy choices in different ways. The grade 8’s created an entire hallway of beautiful colourful paintings each displaying a unique way to show healthy eating. The result was 26 amazing paintings that are enjoyed by our school daily as we walk through the hallways. Our whole school was impressed with the artistic ideas and talents that went into their art projects. Their paintings have helped inspire conversations around healthy food choices as students and teachers discuss what they see in their paintings. We would like to recognize the Grade 8’s and their art teacher Ms. Milczarek for their hard work to make our school a healthier and more beautiful place.
