Each morning our school offers a Breakfast Program for our students. This year the Breakfast/Nutrition Room has also been transformed into our Culture Room. Many changes where made to make this room a place where all children feel welcome. The students gave their input on the changes they wanted to see. Tables were placed in a large circle instead of rows, student art work were put on display, bright attractive bulletin boards were made. The room has become a warm, welcoming space for children to enjoy healthy food choices!!

Our school’s Native as a Second Language class has began a “Water Protectors” group. The group has been promoting the importance of water, as well as the need to protect the fresh water. Students have learned about water as the healthiest drink choice and the need to stay hydrated. They have made posters for the school and have visited each class to spread their message. The group has also taken part in events in the community which focus on protecting the Great Lakes. Ms. Trudeau and the NSL class have been passionate when spreading their “Water Messages”!

Success Story

Our principal Mr. Lettieri has introduced many wonderful initiatives this year which honour students’ strengths. Instead of using food as a reward, we have found many creative ways to recognize students. We have a “Strengths” bulletin board which features, students and staff. Students are able to earn “Gotcha” tickets when they are caught doing something good. These tickets are then put into a draw for prizes. Each month St. Bernadette has a Virtue Assembly and students who are chosen for the virtue of the month. These students become part of out school Virtue Crew and get to go on a special field trip with Mr. Lettieri. Students have also been earning “Blaze Bucks” all year long, which will give them chances at large prizes at the end of the year. What awesome school spirit!

Our school offers a daily Breakfast Program for all students. Children are given nutritious food choices. Some members of Student Council have been volunteering to help out. This year, we are very fortunate to have a member of the Indian Friendship Centre come every Thursday to provide a creative and healthy meal. There is always a huge line up for these delicious breakfasts. Children have had smoothies, fruit salads, scrambled eggs on a bun to name a few. A big thank you to Taryn from the Indian Friendship Centre for her creative and nutritious breakfast ideas!

In the past our school has sold chocolate bars, cookie dough and pizza kits. This year, our Parent Council and Student Council wanted to do a fundraiser that was more nutritious. In the fall, we did the “Fresh From the Farm” fundraiser and it was very successful. We have also decided to sell flower baskets, in partnership with our local hospice. This will be our spring fundraiser. There are fundraising alternatives available that make healthy choices easier. Check your community.
